TOMOSYNTHESIS-GUIDED BREAST BIOPSY
Tomosynthesis-guided vacuum biopsy
Tomosynthesis digital mammograms can visualize lesions that cannot be visualized on standard mammograms. If suspicious findings detected on tomosynthesis mammograms are not found or cannot be clearly visualized on other imaging modalities such as standard mammography, sonography, and MRI, a biopsy of the area should be performed under tomosynthesis guidance.
Software and devices capable of performing biopsies using vacuum needles guided by tomosynthesis images have recently been developed. These high-tech systems allow for biopsy (tissue sampling) of suspicious areas visualized on the best tomosynthesis images with very high accuracy.
If biopsy findings are negative, patients undergo necessary surgical procedures. If biopsy results are positive, patients are spared unnecessary surgery.
